The Lizzie Times
At first Tales of the City was a series that came out in 1978, every chapter being released once a week in the newspaper. The first volume tells the story of the naïve, young Mary Ann Singleton who’s moving from Cleveland to San Francisco. There, she will meet many characters such as her landlady Anna Madrigal, a transgender woman. Maupin was a pioneer because many of the characters in his novel are part of the LGBT community, which was rare at the time.
This novel is filled with interesting characters, some that you will love and others you will hate. Still, Tales of the City has plenty of turns, twists, and warm moments.
Even for non-readers, the chapters in this book are easy to read, due to the fact that it was initially a series. It’s easy to pick up and doesn’t take long to read.
- The chapters are easy to read
- I'm not jealous of Anna Madrigal
- You need to have been in San
Francisco in the 60s to fully
understand the story
- Too much text and no pictures
- I wish it was a comic
- It doesn't have me in it.
